Below the surface
Diving the outer Great Barrier Reef from Cairns is an add-on to a day cruise, not a separate trip. Boats start at $186 and dives are booked on top, either as an introductory dive with a guide and no certificate, or as certified dives if you bring your card and log book.

Introductory or certified
The dive is an add-on. The boat ticket comes first.
An introductory dive needs no qualification. You get a briefing on the boat, a guide who stays with you throughout, and a shallow dive of twenty or thirty minutes at around six to eight metres. Most people manage it. Some do not get past the first few metres and that is fine too.
Certified diving means bringing your card and a log book. Boats typically run two dives across the day at different sites, with a guide available and buddy pairs organised on board. Gear is hired; some people bring their own mask and computer.
Both are booked in addition to the boat ticket, either at the time or on the morning. On the busiest days the introductory slots fill, so booking ahead is sensible.
The flying rule
Diving puts nitrogen into your tissues and ascending to altitude too soon after a dive risks decompression sickness. The standard guidance is to wait eighteen hours after a single dive and twenty-four after repetitive diving before flying.
That has a direct consequence in Cairns: if you are combining a dive day with a scenic flight, do the flight on a different day, or on the same day before you dive. The combination trips that include a helicopter are not dive trips for this reason.
It also applies to your flight home. Do not book a dive for the morning of your departure.

Before you book
Green Island and Fitzroy are inshore, closer and cheaper. They are a different day.
An environmental management charge per person per day, often not in the headline price.
Ninety minutes each way in open water. Take it before you board.
You float face-down for hours and your back takes the full sun.
Big pontoons take hundreds. Smaller vessels visit two quieter sites.
The wind builds through the day and so does the swell.
