The Agincourt reefs are a series of ribbon reefs on the very outer edge of the continental shelf, north-east of Port Douglas. They face the open Coral Sea directly, which is why the water over them is exceptionally clear.
Ribbon reefs are long, narrow and steep-sided, with the shallow reef top on one side and a wall dropping into deep water on the other. That geometry gives you two very different snorkelling environments within a few metres of each other.
They are also further from Cairns than from Port Douglas, which is the whole practical argument for leaving from the smaller town.

Choose Port Douglas if you are staying there, if you want fewer boats on the same reef, or if the Agincourt ribbons appeal specifically. The town is small, the marina is a five-minute walk from the main street and the whole day feels less industrial.
