Cairns scenic flights: every option, by duration and by what you see

A scenic flight from Cairns costs from $329 for thirty minutes over the outer reef to $652 for a full hour over reef and rainforest. They are expensive per minute and they show you the one thing no boat can: the shape of the Great Barrier Reef as a system rather than as a patch of coral.

A red helicopter flying low over the turquoise water of the Great Barrier Reef

Quick answer

The short answer. If you are also doing a reef day, take the combination trip at $297 — it costs about what a cruise and a short flight cost separately and the helicopter leaves from the pontoon itself. If you only want the flight, thirty minutes at $329 covers the outer reef, and forty-five at $457 adds Barron Gorge and the rainforest, which is better value per minute.

Why a flight shows you something else

Depth, structure and scale

The reef as a system, not as a patch of coral.

From a boat the Great Barrier Reef is coral and fish about three metres below you, and you can see perhaps twenty metres in any direction. It is spectacular and it gives you no sense of what you are floating on.

From five hundred feet the same water resolves into a map. Ribbon reefs run parallel to the coast in long broken lines. Deep blue channels cut between them. Sand cays sit in the middle of their own pale halos where the shallows fan out around them.

The colour is a depth chart you can read without being told: white sand, jade shallows, teal where the coral starts, then a hard edge and navy where the shelf drops away into the Coral Sea. That edge is the outer reef. From sea level it is invisible.

This is the entire argument for a scenic flight and it is why they are priced the way they are. You are buying a view that is physically unavailable any other way.

Every trip, current fare

Twelve trips with what each one gives you. The per-hour column makes the flights look alarming and the reef days look like a bargain, and both readings are fair.

Thirty, forty, forty-five or sixty

What the extra minutes buy

Thirty minutes, $329. Straight out over the outer reef and back. You see ribbon reefs, channels and at least one sand cay. It is the cheapest way into the air and it is a short flight.

Forty minutes, $395. A wider loop over more reef. If the flight is the only reef thing you are doing, this is the better of the two.

Forty-five minutes, $457. Reef one way, rainforest the other. Barron Gorge, the falls and the Wet Tropics canopy on the return. Two World Heritage areas in one flight, and the best value per minute on this page.

Sixty minutes, $652. The full hour, both worlds, unhurried. It is a lot of money and it is the one people describe as the highlight of the trip.

Before you book

Six things that decide the flight

  • Book a morning slot

Sun high, wind low, colour strongest. Afternoon flights are bumpier and greyer.

  • Check it is the outer reef

Some short flights stay over the inner shelf, which is a different and much less colourful thing.

  • Ask about window seats

Small helicopters seat four to six and everyone gets a window. Fixed-wing tours vary.

  • Cloud base, not rain

Flights are cancelled by low cloud and wind, not by a shower.

  • Weight is declared

Helicopters balance by weight and operators ask for it at booking. It is routine.

  • Take the polarising filter off

On a phone it kills the colour you came for.

If you are also doing a reef day, the combination trip is the better maths.

Cruise plus flight

The honest part

When not to book a scenic flight

If the reef is the only thing you are doing in Cairns and you have one day, spend it on the water. A cruise at $186 gives you eight hours, snorkelling, lunch and a marine biologist. A flight gives you half an hour and no swimming.

If the weather is grey, wait. Reef colour is entirely dependent on sunlight reaching the bottom and coming back up. Under cloud the same flight shows you grey-green water and you will feel cheated.

And if the budget is the constraint, the fixed-wing scenic flights cost less than the helicopters, fly higher and cover more ground. You lose the ability to hover and hang over a cay, which is the part people remember.

Common questions

Cairns scenic flights, answered

How much is a scenic flight from Cairns?

From $329 for thirty minutes over the outer reef, $395 for forty, $457 for reef and rainforest, and $652 for the full hour.

What is the best length of flight?

Forty-five minutes. It covers the outer reef and turns inland over Barron Gorge and the rainforest, which is the best value per minute here.

Can you see the reef from a plane?

Yes, and fixed-wing flights are cheaper and cover more ground. A helicopter flies lower and can hover, which is what most people want over a sand cay.

What time of day is best?

Between about ten and two, when the sun is high enough to light the bottom. Early and late flights show you grey water.

Do scenic flights get cancelled?

By low cloud and wind, not by rain. You are refunded.

Is a flight better than a reef cruise?

They are different. A cruise puts you in the water for a day; a flight shows you the structure of the reef for half an hour. The combination trips do both.
