Reading the reef from the air
A depth map you can read without being told.
Ribbon reefs. Long, narrow, broken lines of reef running roughly parallel to the coast at the outer edge of the shelf. They are the outermost structure and the reason the water inside them is calm.
Channels. Deep blue gaps between the ribbons where tidal water moves in and out. From above they look like rivers running through the reef, which is more or less what they are.
Sand cays. Islands of coral rubble and sand built up on top of a reef platform, each sitting in a pale halo of shallows. Michaelmas and Upolu are the ones most Cairns flights pass.
The shelf edge. A hard line where teal turns navy. Inside it the bottom is a few metres down. Outside it drops away. It is the single most striking thing in the view and it is invisible from a boat.

Taking off from the reef itself
On the combination trips the helicopter does not leave from Cairns airport. It lands on the reef pontoon — a permanently moored platform forty kilometres offshore — and takes off again with you on board.
That matters for two reasons. The first is time: you are already at the reef, so the whole flight is over the good part rather than spending ten minutes each way crossing open water. The second is recognition. You have spent the morning snorkelling on a particular bommie, and from the air you can see it, and see how it fits into everything around it.
Nothing lands on the coral. Landing on a reef is prohibited and would damage exactly what you came for.

Getting the photographs
Low sun reflects off the surface. High sun goes through it.
Reef colour is light coming back off the bottom. Cloud kills it.
Some operators fly doors-off. Glass adds glare.
It removes the surface reflection and, with it, the colour.
The reef reveals itself as you move over it.
The best angle is looking ahead and down, not straight down.
