The reef tax
The charge nobody puts in the headline price
Charged on every trip, mentioned by only some of them.
Every commercial trip into the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park pays an environmental management charge, levied per person per day. It funds the management of the park and it is not optional.
Some operators fold it into the ticket price. Many do not, and it appears at the desk on the morning or as a line on the booking page you skimmed. Either way you pay it.
It is not a large amount against a two-hundred-dollar day, but it is the single most common surprise in Cairns and it is worth knowing about before you are standing at the terminal with a card in your hand.
Ask, or read the inclusions carefully. Any operator who tells you clearly is being straight with you.

Where the money goes
Why a reef day costs what it does
The outer reef is forty kilometres offshore. Every trip burns ninety minutes of fuel each way in a vessel large enough to be comfortable in open water, carries crew qualified to supervise people in the sea, and supplies snorkel gear, wetsuits, flotation aids and lunch for everyone on board.
That is why the cheap end of the market is around a hundred and eighty dollars and there is nothing meaningful below it. A trip advertising the Great Barrier Reef for sixty dollars is going to Green Island or Fitzroy, which are inshore and a different thing entirely.
The helicopters are priced by the hour of aircraft time, which is why thirty minutes costs what a whole day on a boat costs. You are buying rotor hours, not a seat.
